How did Amy Jackson become an Indian actress?
In 2009, while scouting for fresh faces for their Tamil movie ‘Madrasapattinam’, the makers went through the Miss Teen World website and spotted the 5 foot 6 inch tall Amy Jackson who even though was a foreigner, had striking Indian features. Though she had zero experience in the movies, she was auditioned and cast opposite Arya. The story was based on a British governor’s daughter who falls in love with a humble villager, who is played by Arya. The film released in 2010 and became a big hit in the popular circuit, and was also acknowledged by critics. Almost all the review sites went on to praise Amy Jackson who stood on her own and delivered a polished performance as the lady caught between love and her loyalty to the British Empire. Amy Jackson went on to win the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress for her role.
In 2011, Amy Jackson bagged her first Bollywood film, and was cast opposite Prateik Babbar in a love story called ‘ Ekk Deewana Tha’, a remake of the romantic hit ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’. The movie released in 2012 but was a flop much to her disappointment. Though critics loved it, it did not get the response by the audience that it would have vouched for. In 2012, Amy again collaborated with her ‘Madrasapattinam’director A. L. Vijay for her second Tamil movie ‘Thaandavam’ which co-starred Anushka Shetty and Vikram. The movie was a hit and Amy Jackson’s performance again won her rave reviews, bagging her nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Tamil
Amy Jackson debuted in Telugu movies with ‘Yevadu’ cos-starring Ram Charan and Shruti Haasan. The movie did decent business. What made her exceedingly popular was her 2015 release ‘I’. The magnum opus project by Shankar (known as the ‘James Cameron of India’) made the film on a lavish scale. It was a beautiful love story partly inspired by ‘Beauty and Beast’. The Tamil movie was dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, English and Mandarin. I met with a phenomenal response at the box-office; her chemistry with Vikram was widely appreciated. Though Vikram stole the show with his superlative performance, Amy also had enough material to showcase her histrionics too. Not many know, Samantha Prabhu was the first choice for ‘I’.
