The turning point in Disha’s career however came in 2008, when she was offered the role of ‘Dayaben’ or Daya Jethalal Gada in the immensely popular comedy TV series ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ which airs on SAB TV. She is paired with Dilip Joshi who essays the role of her husband. This TV show was what made Vakani a household name.
‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ was originally a Gujarati play and was penned by journalist and columnist Taarak Mehta. Disha’s character has a minor role in that play. However, as the TV series became increasingly popular, Vakani’s role was expanded and it became a full-fledged lead character. The grating voice of Daya, which is quite popular with the audience, was based on the torn and broken voices of actors in Gujarati plays during the olden times. Mikes were not present during those days and hence actors had to scream out their lines and dialogues which resulted in a gravelly voice.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Disha Vakani
Disha plays the character of ‘Daya Jethalal Gada’ who is one of the female leads in this very popular comedy series show telecast on SAB TV. Daya is the wife of Jethalal Gada, played by Dilip Joshi. The onscreen chemistry between the two is loved by the viewers.
Daya is a family-oriented woman from Ahmedabad who has only studied till the seventh standard. She is forever ready and eager to dance the Gujarati folk dance ‘Garba’ and hence is referred to as the ‘Garba Queen’ by her friends and acquaintances. She can be seen to be perennially talking to her mother on the phone. Daya’s mother constantly finds funny, new names for Jethalal. On the other hand, Daya calls Jethalal as ‘Tapu Ke Papa.’Just like a majority of Indian housewives, Daya believes that calling one’s husband by his name is a sin. Jethalal is often seen scolding Daya. But this does not in any way decrease the unity and love between these two endearing lead characters. Since the show is based on a Gujarati play, Disha being a Gujarati herself feels very comfortable on the sets
