Hit machine Deepika Padukone had found an unlikely arch rival in the super talented Kangana Ranaut who is threatening her Numero Uno position with performance-oriented blockbusters like Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Both Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut have had similar highs and lows in their careers. After Deepika began with a bang in Om Shanti Om, she was slotted as an actress with wooden expressions who just got lucky to be paired on-screen with big stars. She faced setbacks in her professional as well as personal life (breakup with Ranbir Kapoor) till she finally struck gold in Cocktail (2013). It was then a gold rush for Deepika Padukone as she raced to the Number One position with back to back successes like Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram –Leela, Finding Fanny (average business), Happy New Year and Piku. Deepika also fashioned herself as a seasoned performer, growing from strength to strength with every film.
Kangana Ranaut who showed brilliance right from her first film Gangster (2005) did well for a couple of years, before she chose some really lousy films that injustice to her performance abilities. Her script choosing choices swung from the best (Fashion -2008) to the worst (Rascals – 2010). She was written about more for her personal life and failed romances with the likes of Aditya Pancholi, Adhyayan Suman, Ajay Devgn and more, before she decided to get serious about her career. She surprised her fans by teaming up with R. Madhavan and scoring an unlikely hit in Tanu Weds Manu (2011). While Krrrish 3 put Kangana back in the reckoning, it was Queen (2014) which was the game-changer. Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015) put Kangana Ranaut on the top of the game in a head-to-head combat with the reigning queen Deepika Padukone.
The two actresses have been giving each other the royal snub. While Deepika who collected the Best Actress Screen Awards 2015 for her performance in Happy New Year, she said that the year belong to Kangana Ranaut for Queen. The quirky actress however deemed Deepika’s public announcement as a PR exercise and said that it would have been better if Deepika had told her in person that she had appreciated her work. In 2015, both Kangana Ranaut and Deepika have showed why they deserve to win the Best Actress Award for their respective performances. While Deepika was on equal footing with grand-masters Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan in Piku, Kangana Ranaut gave us the best double-role in recent times with a spunky performance in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
