Nandana Sen, the prominent Indian actress is known for her child-right activism, as well as her age-defying beauty. Born on August 19, 167; at the age of 47, she continues to mesmerize audiences across the world. Nandana is the daughter of Nobel laureate and Bharat Ratna recipient Amartya Sen, and Nabanita Dev Sen (known as a noted author for contemporary Bengali literature, Padma Shri winner).
Born in Delhi, Nandana was veered towards literature. She went on to study literature at Havard and was even conferred the ‘Detur Prize’ which is quite an enviable honor, in itself She went on to study film production at Peter Stark Producing Program, USC Film School. She started writing and directing short films, one of them ‘Arranged Marriage’ became a regular fixture in multiple film festivals across the world. Nandana began to train at the acclaimed Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York and also studied theater in Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London.

Nandana Sen at 38 played the 17 year old girl and sister of Rani Mukherjee in the highly acclaimed ‘Black’. She was also singled out for her backless scene and strong screen presence in the movie ‘Tango Charlie’ that released in the same year. In the same year, she excelled in the America drama ‘The War Within’. Nandana kept a good mix of the art and commercial in her kitty of films, alternating between The Forest and Prince with enviable ease. She was also a part of the British TV series ‘Sharpe’ which had her playing crucial roles. In 2010, Nandana played a role in ‘Autograph’ the Bengali blockbuster.
Nandana Sen however gave her best in ‘Rang Rasiya’ which also demanded her to go nude. Rang Rasiya, a tale of the illustrious artist Raja Ravi Varma and his muse ‘Sugandha’ was stuck in cans due to censorship issues since 2008 and finally saw the release on November 7, 2014.Upon the release, Rang Rasiya met with lots of praise from the general public as well as critics, especially for the story, the direction and the performances of Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen.
Nandana Sen is an active campaign for child protection movement. She is the face of NGO ‘Operation Smile’. She represents India’s National Celebrity for Child Protection and against Gender Based Violence and is a juror for public hearings with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). Nandana Sen has been actively participating in causes for child protection and stopping child trafficking.

Nandana Sen was in a live-in relationship with movie producer Madhu Mantea for nine years and finally ended it in May 2012. Nandana said that the relationship couldn’t work out because of the distance issue. She said, “ “Madhu and I were planning to relocate to New York together, but given the speed and enthusiasm with which his work in Mumbai is growing, it is not good for him to move away. We love each other deeply, we always will. But none of us believe in the long-term stability of an intercontinental relationship.”
Fast-forward to June 22, 2013, Nandana Sen married the 59 year old John Makinson, CEO and Chairman of Penguin Publishing in a privately-held ceremony in Shelter Island, New York. Nandana met Makinson who is in his 50s in November 2012 and both fell in love with each other. Nandana and John live together in New York.
Madhu Mantena was happy for the wedding of his ex-girlfriend and said that he would have even attended the wedding, because he was working on the promotions of Lootera, with his company’Phantom Productions’.
