Niharika Singh is an Indian model, actress, and winner of the 2005 Femina Miss India Earth pageant. Before making her debut in the Indian film industry, Niharika appeared in many print advertisements, television commercials, and music videos. Her debut film was the critically acclaimed Ashim Ahluwalia directed ‘Miss Lovely’ alongside actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It premiered at the Cannes film festival of 2012.
The rollercoaster ride through cinema
Niharika Singh maintains that destiny chose her. She was just a clueless person without any kind of experience. Singh always wanted to showcase her talent in different kinds of cinema. As she was not from a filmy family, she did not have anyone to properly guide her or help her plan her movie career. She started modelling and later took part in the Miss India contest. She was signed as the main lead in many mainstream film projects and also shot for a few of them, but none saw the light of day. Her multi-film deal with the late Raj Kanwar also got shelved.
Like all other newbies without any filmy connections, Niharika struggled to find a footing in the Indian film industry. This was the time when she was offered the role of the female lead in the movie ‘Miss Lovely.’ She was totally enamored by the script and accepted the offer. It may have been a patchy and interesting journey in the Indian film industry, but being associated with ‘Miss Lovely’ helped Singh find her groove and evolve from being a nob, to a rookie, to the fine actress that she is now. Her passion for cinema has only multiplied manifold.
The 5 feet 6 inches tall Niharika’s rediscovery of cinema began during her experience at Cannes. It was a fantasy like experience and almost polarizing. She was joyous with all the attention showered on her, but she also felt foolish and superficial at the same time. Everyone present at Cannes was a master of cinematic art, while she knew next to nothing. This was where she changed her course from being a drifter to a zealous student of this wondrous art form.
With a glint in her eye, Niharika Singh states that working with Nawazuddin and Ashim altered her perception of the movies. It had a big impact on her and enabled her to see that alternate and parallel ‘space’ which she had never even heard of! This led her to enroll for a film appreciation course at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, and since then she has never looked back. She is now more aware, but also more saddened by the state of the film distribution system which curtails and inhibits the making of eclectic cinema.
