Rani Mukherjee was born on March 21, 1978, her father Ram Muherjee is a former movie director and her mother Krishna is an ex-playback singer. Her elder brother Raja Mukherjee is a movie director. Her aunt Debashree Roy is a popular Bengali movie actress. Her cousin Kajol is one of the most popular actresses of Bollywood. Rani Mukherjee studied in Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu and graduated from SNDT Women’s University with a degree in Home Science. She even trained professional as an Odissi dancer.

Rani Mukherjee was approached in 1994 by director Salim Khan to act in his movie ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’. Since she was very young, she declined the role which went to Urmila Matondkar. The movie was a flop. but it made Bollywood aware of her amazing potential waiting to be tapped. Before taking on her first Bollywood movie, Rani Mukherjee acted in her father’s Bengali film ‘Biyer Phool’ (1996) where she played the role of a younger sister of the protagonist, played by Indrani Haldar. Salim Khan again approached Rani with another role, this one more author-backed. Rani accepted the role and shone in the socially relevant ‘Raja ki Aayegi Baarat’ which despite being a flop opened a window of opportunity for her.

Rani Mukherjee’s best films include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Saathiya (2002), Hum Tum (2004), Yuva (2004), Veer Zara (2004), Black (2005), No One Killed Jessica (2011), Talaash – The Answer Lies Within (2012) and Mardaani (2014). Her career took a dip post 2006, after which she revived it with No One Killed Jessica. Since then, Rani has been working on subjects that have a radically different approach and treatment.
