As Ranveer Singh celebrates his birthday on July 6, this 29 year old actor owes it to his spirited childhood and teenage years for fueling the energy that pushed him toward being an actor. He was born to Jagjit Singh Bhavnani and Anju Bhanvnani. Ranveer’s mother Anju is the sister of Sunita Kapoor (nee Bhavnani), who is the wife of star-actor Anil Kapoor.
Ranveer has cousins in the form of Sonam Kapoor, Harsh and Rhea Kapoor. He has an elder sister called Ritika Bhavnani. Ranveer dropped ‘Bhavnani’ from his surname and used ‘Kapoor’ as he felt that name was more brandable in Bollywood.
Ranveer, an extrovert, was always so, right from his childhood. Always aspiring to be on the forefront of plays and dances, he would take active part in school debates and plays. He says,” I was a total filmi child, always watching TV and films.” The kid had a special fondness to the ‘Chumma Chumma’ number from ‘Hum’ which was choreographed on Amitabh Bachchan.
Known now as the ‘new age Govinda’, Ranveer Singh graduated from H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. He went to United States to study Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University, Bloomington. He also studied taking acting classes, and then began to take part in theater and plays in the US. Ranveer returned to the US in 2007 and began to work as a copywriter in advertising agencies in Mumbai like O&M.
Ranveer dabbled in a bit of assistant direction and left it to focus on acting. He started sending out his pictures and portfolios to various producers’ offices hoping to get a break. He started giving many auditions but they did not translate into any concrete role. He recalls of being frustrated many a time for not getting a role, and had even considered if he was really going for the right profession. Till one day, YRF film called in 2010 and asked him to give an audition for the role of ‘Bitoo Sharma’ for Band Baaja Baarat. The rest is history.
