Sumona Chakravarti is an Indian model and a TV and film actress who is popular as Kapil Sharma’s wife in the popular comedy show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ and Natasha Kapoor in the hit tele-serial ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’. Sumona achieved fame after winning the comedy show ‘Kahani Comedy Circus Ki’ contest along with Kapil Sharma. The show was telecast on Sony Entertainment Television.
Education and family life
Sumona Chakravarti was born on June 24, 1988 in Lucknow, UP. She attended the Loreto Convent in Lucknow and then finished her schooling from Hiranandani Foundation School located in Mumbai. Chakravarti completed her graduation from Mumbai’s Jai Hind College.
Sumona’s lives with a younger brother and her parents. Her father is currently working in Sri Lanka. The family of this 5’4″ talented actress moved to Mumbai in 1997. She debuted into the Indian film industry as a child actor in the 1999 movie ‘Mann’ starring Aamir Khan. She got this opportunity when she was 12 years old and studying in the sixth standard.
Sumona Chakravarti made her theater debut in 2009 with an English opera-play musical called “Da Dating Truths.”She later portrayed varied characters in different television soap operas and shows such as ‘Kab Kyon Kaise,’ ‘Kasamh Se,’ ‘How’s That!,’ ‘Kasturi,’ ‘Sun Yaar Chill Maar,’ ‘Detective Doll,’ ‘Horror Nights,’ ‘Devi,’ ‘Khotey Sikkey,’ and ‘Sapnon Se Bhare Naina.’Sumona was also a part of the TV mini-series ‘Ek Thhi Naayka.’ It starred Yash Tonk and Mauli Ganguly and was produced by Ekta Kapoor.
Chakravarti is currently essaying the character of Natasha Kapoor in the television drama ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain,’ which airs on Sony TV. She is playing the role of a rich spoilt brat who is the sister of business honcho Ram Kapoor, portrayed by actor Ram Kapoor, and the wife and love of Karthik, portrayed by actor Mohit Malhotra.
During this phase of her career, Sumona also simultaneously took part in stand-up comedy shows and partnered Kapil Sharma in the Sony TV show “Kahani Comedy Circus Ki.” She was the winner on this show. Subsequently, Sumona was chosen to be part of a new reality comedy show called ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil,’ produced by Kapil Sharma. The show soon went on to become a massive hit and garnered her lots of fame. Her work in the show has also met with appreciation and praise from the audience.
Bade Achhe Lagte Hain: It a very popular soap opera which airs on Sony TV. The TV drama is based on ‘Patrani,’ a Hindi novel written by Imtiaz Patel. The show recounts the story of two varying personalities, Ram Kapoor and Priya Sharma (portrayed by Sakshi Tanwar) who get married and then accidently discover their love for each other. Sumona plays the role of Natasha Amarnath Kapoor, the sister of the male lead.
Comedy Nights with Kapil: This is the show which has made Sumona a widely-known face on TV. Sumona essays the character of Kapil Sharma’s wife, Mrs. Bittu Sharma. Their characters’ relationship on the show is a sweet-sour one. Sumona’s lips and her character’s family are often the butt of all jokes on the show, but the rapport between her and Kapil is very evident and something that can be seen off-screen as well. Sumona has grabbed the hearts of the viewers with her great performance and her sizzling on-screen presence.
Career in films: Sumona Chakravarti foray into films began as a child actor in the movie “Mann” and later in “Vidyarthi”. In 2010, she was a part of the movie ‘Aakhari Decision’ where she essayed the role of Manasi. In 2012, Sumona had a cameo in the blockbuster film Barfi. It starred Ranbir Kapoor, alongside Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz.
Career as a model: Sumona has modelled in many TV commercials and ad films. She has featured in advertisements for ‘Face of “Dive Self”: Spa and Wellness products,’‘PBL Jewelers of the U.K,’ and the promo of Star Plus’s show Master Chef. Chakravarti was the Second Runner-up at the Times of India Mr. & Miss Perfect ’04; a participant in Miss Mumbai 2005; and a Finalist in Streax Savvy Cover Girl Contest 2006.
Sumona Chakravarti was recently in the news for her alleged relationship with fellow actor Gaurav Chopra. However, Sumona has refuted these claims. She has stated that she has been single for almost 7 years. She further reiterated that whenever she begins dating she would be open about her relationship.
Sumona clarified that barring Gaurav and Eijaz Khan, almost all her actor friends are married. Hence, they are the only friends that she can hang out with. She maintains that each one of them calls the other up whenever they have to attend an event or want to party. This however does not signify that she is dating either one of them. Sumona looks forward to finding her man and sharing her relationship status with the world. In fact, even her mother is eagerly and happily awaiting for this to happen.
As Kapil Sharma’s ‘wife’
Sumona adds that many people actually believe that Kapil Sharma is her real-life husband, their chemistry on the show tend to set tongues wagging. She confesses that she is not too good at comedy. Sumona says,” I am an actor, not a stand-up comedian. People think I can do comedy by myself but that is not the truth. With Kapil, my chemistry is so good that we have clicked big time and people want us together. Actually Kapil had done a mock-shoot with some actress for Comedy Nights with Kapil. But when Kapil saw the shoot, he said, “Please mujhe meri Sumona laa do. People now think that I am actually Kapil’s wife.”
